The Flag Flap

by Wendy on 23 September 2009

You won’t see me standing up for Bank of America. I think they are a terrible company, and they tried to screw us over after we were good customers for almost a decade*. So we are no longer customers of theirs.

However, right now they are involved in a scandal where a branch manager in a small South Carolina town refused to allow small flags to be placed on BoA property along the route of a funeral for a fallen marine. Now apparently people all over the country are closing their accounts with Bank of America because of it.

The thing is, BoA had nothing to do with this. It is a yet another case of BFRACSGJIB: Blind Following of Regulations Against Common Sense and Good Judgment by Idiot Bureaucrats.

It’s one bank manager being ignorant. If you take your money from Bank of America, do it because they are a sleazy and dishonest company. Not because one small-town bank manager is an idiot. That doesn’t make any sense. BoA can’t know every action of their many thousands of managers and employees all over the world. It isn’t possible. They also can’t predict based on past behavior which one of those many thousands of employees is going to act like an idiot tomorrow. I’ll bet this idiotic bank manager in SC was pretty well-behaved to this point.

I’ll bet my bank (which is also international) has at least one idiotic branch manager somewhere. They’re still a good bank.

Common sense, people. Just because other people don’t use it doesn’t mean you can’t.

*BoA raised our interest rate on an 8-year-old credit card to over 25%. We had never had a late payment and nothing had changed on our credit. Then they tried to implement a $15/month minimum charge on the same account, which had a $0 balance. When I called them to inquire why it had changed, I was told, “no reason is listed here”.  I told them to change the terms back or I would close my account, they refused to change it back. So we closed our account. Basically, they are disinterested in doing business with responsible customers who pay their credit card bills in full every month and don’t carry a revolving balance.
